Microsoft wants customers to change the firmware on 3PIP Phones to SIP firmware and use them with Microsoft Teams via the Teams SIP gateway.Īnnounced on 5th August, August being a time when a lot of people are away on holiday, and needing action by 29th September, a pretty aggressive deadline if you have a large number of phones! I would go as far as to say an unrealistic deadline for a large enterprise.

Microsoft has dropped a pretty impactful announcement to anyone using Skype for Business Phones in “3PIP” with Microsoft Teams. Thanks to Matt Ellis for highlighting this (someone worth following if you are in the Teams space).
SKYPE FOR BUSINESS END OF LIFE TEAMS UPDATE
Stay tuned I will update this blog and LinkedIn as soon as I know more. You will have to change to teams or find another alternative when Microsoft turn off Skype for Business in 2021.Update: Microsoft is aware this deadline may cause customers issues and is working on an update. If you have a special reason to continue using Skype for Business, we can re-enable it on individual user accounts, and we can work with you to find resolutions to your skype issues. If you are invited to a 'Skype for Business' meeting, you will join by a using a 'Join Meeting Only' version of Skype that is part of Teams. If you know in advance, they will be doing that it is best to advise them to use the Microsoft Edge browser. If you are inviting people who do not use Teams, they will be able to join a meeting by following a link to the web version of Teams in the invitation email. Once we switch to teams only mode you will only be able to schedule meetings using Teams. People and organisations, we work with should be planning to move to Teams soon to prepare for the end of Skype for Business, once they are using teams the multimedia and rich text functions will become available to use. This is not going to be a problem for communication inside Cardiff Met because everybody should be using teams. You can use plain text to chat/message between Teams and people using 'Skype For Business'. You cannot use rich text, emojis etc. between Teams and Skype calls (inter-op calls) Microsoft has scheduled Teams/Consumer Skype interoperability for quarter 1 of 2020. You can have both teams and consumer skype installed on your computer for the time being. Teams does not work with the Consumer Version of Skype at present T here are however a few things that will not work in calls/chat between Skype and Teams (interop calls): If Somebody calls you via Skype for Business it will appear in Teams, and you will only have to set your presence/availability information in the one place. The benefit of 'Teams Only' mode is that you will only need to use the Teams application. This will turn off Skype for Business by default for Cardiff Met. O n September 1st we are going to change the system so it operates in 'Teams Only' mode. You also must set your availability/presence status in both Skype and Teams separately. So, if somebody sends you a Skype for Business message/call you would receive it in your Skype application and if somebody sends you a Teams message/call you will see it in your Teams application.

This means that Skype for Business and Teams operate independently. Presently we are operating in 'Islands Mode'. Part of the move towards replacing Skype for Business with Teams is to set up the Teams operating mode, which dictates how Teams & Skype work across the university. Teams is now being regularly used across the university in both academic and administrative roles. Over the last year we have been preparing for this by evaluating, testing and deploying Microsoft Teams, which is the replacement for Skype for Business.

Microsoft have released the 'end of life' date for 'Skype for Business'
